Dr James Topping – Brunel’s First Vice-Chancellor

Ede and Ravenscroft were appointed the University’s official robe makers in 1965.

This gown and mortarboard were designed for Dr James Topping, first Vice‑Chancellor of the University (1966-1971), by Ede and Ravenscroft.

The gown (on display in the Eastern Gateway Building) is in blue damask, with Brunel blue velvet on the facings and yoke with 3/4 inch gold oak leaf lace on the outside edge of facings and yoke, and 3/4 inch gold leaf lace on the shoulder wings, sleeve cuts and bottom of hanging sleeve. The cost was £112.
